Don't Second-Guess God

Are there any dentists here today? Good. Now I can talk freely about dentists. I have never been on the same page with my dentist. Now don't get me wrong. It is not my current dentist in particular. I have had four different dentists in my life and I have felt the same way about every one. I don't trust dentists at all. It is not them. It is me.

In the past month I have had four fillings replaced, a root canal, and in a week I will have a crown put on one of my molars. Great, huh?

I was fine before I went to the dentist. There was no pain and no discomfort. And so you can imagine I have been second-guessing my dentist all along. It is funny though. Because the first time I went in to be drilled, the dental assistant told me if it made me feel better, I could work on the doctor later. I said that would be great. The dentist then told me I would have to finish eight years of dental school first. I replied that I often told people the exact same thing about being pastor. If they wanted to second guess me, they could go to school for eight years.

Now it is one thing to second-guess your dentist, a coach, a college professor, or even a pastor. God's Word, however, makes it clear that we should never second-guess God. He is wiser than we are. His ways are unsearchable. His gifts are plentiful. Don't second-guess God.

Verse 33 begins with the word, "Oh." This is a word of awestruck amazement in the Greek. The Apostle was no ordinary Joe. He had the best religious training. He was a very bright, gifted, and talented man. And he wrote these words standing in awe of God's wisdom.

We too should be in awe of the wisdom of God. The "depths of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God" are unfathomable to us. Could you make one rock out nothing, let alone a mountain? Could you give light to the world, let alone create the sun, moon, and stars? Could you make all things coexist in the world for their specific purposes? We have trouble coexisting in our homes together. God's amazing wisdom is completely unfathomable to us.

God has all the facts. He knows everything. Not only that, but he sees all time at once. So he knows all things before they happen. He knows how many hairs we have on our heads. He knows each of our names. He knows why we do things. He knows every thought we have.

And God uses that knowledge to help us. We can't always see it at the time. But we have his promise that he makes all things work out for the good of those who love him. So when we hit bumps in the road of life, God turns those bumps into good things for us. He uses what he has to perfectly weave our lives together in order to bless us. We can't even manage our own schedules some days.

How could we ever second-guess God? He is wiser than we are. And yet, we as sinful human beings tend to do this second-guessing of God. How many teens haven't asked God why he gave them the parents he did? How many parents haven't asked God why God gave them the teenagers that he did. How many people haven't second-guessed God why he has given them this sickness or that unexpected bill? How may people have second-guessed God when he has decided to take someone from this world unexpectedly?

Before we second-guess God, we have to remember that we don't have all the facts. The truth of the matter is that we have very little of the facts. God knows all and is perfect in how he uses that knowledge.

Would we ever like to know more about why God does things? Absolutely. That is natural. But we can't read the mind of God. He gives us everything we need to know in the Bible.

We also can't give God advice. Sometimes our prayers are like that though, aren't they? "God, we need enough money to pay the bills. We can't lose grandma right now. She holds the family together. I could use a new job, better friends, a more loving spouse, and so on and so on." God has all the knowledge. He knows what we need at exactly the time we need it.

That doesn't mean we always will understand the actions of God. His ways are unsearchable. Paul wrote that we can trace out the path of God in order to get to the reasons for his judgments. God knows. God does. We cannot second-guess him.

And why in the world would we ever second-guess a God who has given us so much! The Apostle Paul said superbly, "Who has ever given to God, that God should repay him." We give God nothing he needs. And yet he continues to give and give to us. If it weren't for God, at best we would all be starving, naked, covered in sores, and lying in the desert.

Paul confirms again that we have no right to second-guess God when he wrote, "For from him and through him and to him are all things." God owes us nothing. Everything comes from God. He created the heavens and the earth. He makes our food grow and water flow. He takes care of everything. He preserves our little planet so that it does not careen off into oblivion.

And God doesn't do this because of who we are or what we have done. All this God does because he is our good and merciful Father in Heaven, and not because we have earned or deserved it. Undeserved love. That is God's grace. That is why his gifts to us are plentiful. We have no right to second-guess such a kind and gracious God.

God is wiser than us. God's ways are unsearchable. God's gifts are plentiful. In spite of all this evidence, we, as sinful human beings still second-guess God. How pitiful we are! This is breaking the very First Commandment. When we second-guess we are not fearing, loving, and trusting in God above all things. We are actually saying that we are smarter than God. We are saying that we know how fix things better than God. We are saying that God is not trust-worthy. You have sinned. I have sinned. Let us repent now.

In God's wisdom, he saw these sins of ours. God saw the punishment waiting for us in hell. And God used this knowledge for our good. He sent his only Son, Jesus, as the solution to the problem. Christ Jesus then lived a life fully trusting in the Father, never second-guessing, always praying "Thy will be done." Jesus never even second-guessed the Father when he was hanging on the cross making the full payment for our sins. With Jesus' resurrection from the dead on Easter we continue to see the wisdom of God, who worked out our salvation for us and gives us eternal life in heaven.

Faith in Jesus Christ saves. Trust that promise of God and all of our Creator's promises. When you go to the dentist, you may second-guess him, but we don't ever need to second-guess God. He is wiser than we are. His ways are unsearchable. His gifts are plentiful. AMEN.
